Using email newsletters and updates to build your client relationships is cost-effective and proven to deliver results.

1. Building your list

You can have the best newsletter/email campaign in the world, but if you have no one to send it to, it’s no use.

1. Only use permission based email – do not spam or buy a list
2. Add sign up links to your website, email signature and social media profiles
3. Do cross-promotions with other email newsletter publishers to reach new audiences

2. Getting your emails opened

Just because someone signs up to your list, doesn’t mean that they will open every email you send them.

  1. Make your subject line interesting (and appropriate)
  2. Use the readers’ name at least once in each email
  3. Be consistent with your ‘from’ address, and make it a clear address

3. Making sure they take action

You are sending emails to build a relationship with your readers, and also to encourage action.

  1. Identify the action that you want people to take
  2. Ensure that the action is relevant to the reader
  3. Ask them to take that action with clear directions (e.g. book now), and a reason why (e.g. to take advantage of the discounted rate)

4. Reducing the unsubscribe rate

Your readers will not join your list to be sold to. They will join your list because they are interested in what you have to say, and will unsubscribe if they feel ‘sold’.

  1. Be interesting about your subject
  2. Don’t just sell, sell, sell. Use 4 items of information to 1 item of sales
  3. Be a little bit friendly – your readers will appreciate the change of pace

5. Following up

Your email update or newsletter is not a one-shot-wonder. To make it really work, you need to follow up.

  1. When people sign up, send them a welcome note
  2. If offering a report or giveaway for sign-ups, ask recipients what they think after 3 days
  3. If you get feedback or questions, respond immediately, and then reference them in your next newsletter
