Making Time for Marketing

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that you’re a busy person. In fact, I’d go as far to say that you probably have more work that you can possibly get done in one day. Am I right?

If you’re that busy, it’s likely that you also struggle to find time to do any marketing – and you wouldn’t be alone. (It actually happens to me too – but don’t tell anyone I told you that!)

However, you also probably know that you have to make time for your marketing, or it won’t get done, and you won’t find those clients you want.

In this week’s tip, I’ll explain exactly how I make time for marketing my own business, and what you can do to make time for marketing in your business too.

this week’s tip: manage your week to make time for marketing

To ensure that your marketing gets done. you have to make time for it.

Here’s how I do it: I allocate specific days of the week to specific tasks in a particular way.

First, you choose how many days a week you are going to work.

In those days you have 3 types of activity:

1) Profit Generating: Doing things you get paid for; which could be seeing clients or making products etc…

2) Marketing and Development: All the things that you do to get you to your profit generating days. This includes everything from creating strategy to writing blogs, networking, having 121 meetings, and all the other bits of marketing you do.

3) Administration: Bookkeeping, filing, and the other 101 things that business owners have to do.

Decide how many of each kinds of day you are going to have in a week. For me, it’s 2 x marketing and development, 2 x profit generating, and 1 1/2 x administration (yes, you can allocate half days if that’s what your business needs).

In practice, this means that I only book my mentoring, consultancy or training sessions on my profit generating days. I only attend networking events, write magazine and blog articles and design new events and content on my marketing and development days. And I do all of my admin work on those last 1 1/2 days.

This system is so simple, I was unsure it would work, but it’s been great for me. There is also the added benefit of peace of mind when you know that you are doing your designated actions for the day, so that you don’t have the stress of feeling that you really ought to be doing something else.
